Understanding Layer Poultry Lighting

A well-designed layer chicken lighting program using appropriate lighting solutions can positively impact production by:

  • Increasing spawning rates
  • Improving egg shell quality
  • Reducing egg losses
  • Reducing pickering/cannibalism

Light Perception in Layer Chickens

The key to building an effective layer chicken lighting program

Unlike human beings, chickens perceive light differently, through specialized photoreceptors in the pineal gland and hypothalamus. Light exposure directly affects their circadian rhythm, which regulates essential hormonal and behavioural functions.

The right balance of light intensity, photoperiod (duration), and spectrum is essential to successful poultry production. Developing an effective layer chicken lighting program tailored to their needs is a strategic investment that supports both performance and productivity.

Key Elements of a Successful Poultry Lighting Program

Photoperiod

A lighting schedule of 14–16 hours per day, gradually increasing after brooding, is ideal. This must be followed by a period of darkness to preserve hormonal balance and support rest.

Uniform Light Distribution

Lighting uniformity ensures even access to light across the flock, leading to more consistent behaviour and production. To reduce egg losses, only nesting areas should be shadowed, creating the right path for the birds to lay their eggs in the nesting area.

Light Intensity

Maintain 10–30 lux at bird level depending on the breed and barn layout. Adjustments may be required as birds grow or in different housing systems.

Sunrise/Sunset Simulation

All systems should allow dimming to adapt to photoperiods. Simulating sunrise and sunset has been shown to reduce stress, improving welfare and egg production.

Light Spectrum & Colour Temperature

Measured in nanometers (nm) and expressed in Kelvin (K), different light wavelengths influence bird behaviour and physiology.

3000K Warm White
This technology combines yellow and orange wavelengths that reduce stress and aggression, promote calm behaviour, and stimulate egg laying.
Red and White (1500K–5000K)
This optimal technology balances stimulation and calm: white light stimulates active behaviours and egg laying while red light has a calming effect that reduces aggression (including cannibalism).
