The benefits of appropriate lighting in a pig farming production

Science has shown that pigs can discriminate between warmer and cooler light temperatures and that the colour preference seems to vary according to the activity performed. Lighting requirements therefore differ at each stage of the production cycle.
By managing key lighting elements such as spectrum, photoperiod, intensity, and light distribution across the facilities, producers can create optimal conditions across all stages of production.
Just like the spectrum, photoperiods should vary based on the production stage. However, a minimal lighting period of at least 8 hours is required. Longer light exposure (min. 16 hours light) may improve reproductive performance and growth rates for sows and piglets. Longer photoperiods may improve feed efficiency, immune function, and average daily gain in growing pigs.
Even light distribution across the barn ensures consistent behaviour and reduces the formation of dark zones, which pigs tend to avoid. This minimizes crowding and supports uniform weight gain.
Light intensity should also be adapted to each stage:
Dimmable lighting allows gradual transitions between day and night, which helps reduce stress and supports natural behavioural rhythms that are particularly important in farrowing and gestation phases.
Pig farm lighting varies depending on the objective of the production stage. Below are the main technologies suited to pig farming:
Warm colour temperatures are recommended for:
Colder colours are recommended for:
3000K warm white
Warm white light with a reddish-yellow spectrum has a calming effect, especially beneficial in farrowing rooms to reduce stress in sows and piglets and promote their well-being. It also helps to minimize aggression.
4000K neutral white / 5000K Slightly cool white
A neutral or slightly cool white light that balances calmness and alertness. Ideal as a multipurpose lighting solution throughout the building for all production cycles.
6500K Cold white
Cool light with a strong blue spectrum stimulates alertness, increases weight gain and heat and fertility rates, making it ideal for breeding environments where behavioral stimulation is beneficial.
Full Spectrum
This lighting technology mimics natural daylight and has been associated with improved reproductive rates and weight gain.
It is clear that lighting plays a key role in modern pig productions since it can stimulate the desired animal behaviour, sustain health, and increase performance.
